Missoula, Montana sits in a valley and borders the Bitterroot Mountains. Located in western Montana, Missoula is only about 45 miles from Idaho. Founded in 1860, it has become one of the larger cities in Montana and is home to the University of Montana. About 18,000 people live in the area. The Clark Fork River runs through the city.

Waterfalls seem to be more numerous than glaciers in Glacier National Park in early summer. They are everywhere. Many of them are along the roads, and many more require a scenic hike to get to. Most of the ones we hiked to were when we stayed on the St. Mary’s side of Glacier National Park.

Going to the Sun Road is the only road that traverses Glacier National Park from West Glacier to St. Mary, Montana. It crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass at an elevation of 6,646 feet. Construction on the road began in 1921 and it is about 50 miles long. It is one of the most scenic roads in America.
