Mammoth Cave National Park has the longest cave system in the world and more is getting mapped every year. It has more than 420 miles of surveyed passage ways, nearly twice as long as the second longest cave system which is located in Mexico. Mammoth Caves was made a National Park in 1941.
Cumberland Falls
The Cumberland Falls are the second largest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. They measure 68 feet high by 125 feet wide.
It’s spring and we had recent rains, so the river was full and stunning to see.
The adjacent Cumberland Falls Resort State Park has a lodge and a restaurant but unfortunately it wasn’t open for the season yet. It would have been nice to enjoy a dinner there.
We stayed at Laurel Lake Campground. They had full service. There was hardly anyone there and the property was large and quiet. The area was very isolated, so very little in things to do other than visiting the waterfalls.
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Colonel Harland Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken as a restaurant/motel in Corbin, Kentucky in the 1940s. The original location is still a KFC, but it’s also a museum, which unfortunately was closed for renovations when we visited. Bummer. We were able to order takeout which consisted of an 8 piece chicken tenders with mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese and biscuits. It was absolutely delicious.
Mammoth Cave National Park
We were previously here in March 2020 at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, but our cave tour was cancelled. Two years later, COVID is still with us but at least we got to go on a tour. We enjoyed the Domes and Dripstones tour.
The caves were initially reported in the mid 1700s. The geology in the area is composed of thick limestone with a sandstone cap. There is a subterranean waterway which up until the 1990s, could be toured by boat.
Even though Mammoth Cave does have cave formations like stalactites, stalagmites, columns, draperies, and bacon, they are not as prevalent as in other caves like Carlsbad Caverns. This is a cave cricket.
Stonehenge Kentucky is located in Munfordville. It is part of someone’s backyard. It doesn’t appear to be an accurate representation of Stonehenge in England, but it was still pretty impressive. The public can visit with a voluntary donation.
Singing Hills RV Park, Mammoth Cave
We’ve stayed here before. They have full hook ups and good enough WIFI to stream.
Singing HIlls is just outside of Mammoth Cave National Park. Daffodils were blooming. We enjoyed a couple of beautiful sunsets.
We spotted a four leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day. Pretty special.
