Ormond Beach in located on the east coast of Florida just north of Daytona Beach. In the past we stayed in Flagler Beach, which is a little north of Ormond Beach. Unfortunately, our stay was plagued by a bitter cold, windy and wet storm. We only had a couple days of sunshine in a week. Even though we missed out on daily beach walks because of the weather, we were treated with views of a dramatic Atlantic stormy winter sea, which we didn’t get a good photo of. This was the nicest day.
Coral Sands RV, Ormond Beach
It’s a hotel and RV park right on the ocean.
Our site backed up to a spectacular ocean view. We had full service including fast enough WIFI to stream. Our 50 amp power pedestal needed repair, one of the 2 power limbs had partially pulled out requiring the electrician to reattach it. After a couple of hours, we finally had electricity. From Indian Mound Fish Camp it was only an hour drive to Coral Sands.
Unfortunately, Ormond Beach doesn’t allow dogs on the beach. It didn’t matter much for this visit because of the bad weather, but there weren’t good dog walking options or a fenced dog park at the RV park. Fortunately, we did find other areas around town we could drive to where we could walk him. Our neighbors had four guinea pigs that they kept in a pen outside when the weather was nice. Jake was obsessed with them but we were concerned he would consider them an appetizer. The owners insisted on having Jake sniff a couple of them, thinking it would calm him down. He even licked one, but at that point his fascination was only escalating and so prudence dictated some separation.
A great blue heron patiently waiting for this guy to catch a fish. It didn’t happen.
Ruddy turnstones were one of the many shore birds seen daily.
Sanderlings were scurrying about, even underfoot.
Willets were right in the fringe of the surf making for some great photos.
Despite the weather, we had a few good sunrises and sunsets.
Central Park
Central Park consists of 4 parks with 4 lakes that have walking trails around three of them. Each trail is about a 1 mile loop around each lake. There were numerous observation decks to bird watch. We came across a few turtles. The best part was the trail was dog friendly, so Jake had a nice walk.
Ormond Beach Scenic Loop
A beautiful drive through live oak trees that form a canopy over the road. This is what “old florida” looked like.
Part of the scenic loop went past a marsh that had nice birding.
Ormond Beach is a wonderful area. The size is just about right, big enough to support larger stores and a variety of restaurants, but small enough to still have a beach town feel.
