Life on the road has been one of the most amazing things we had done during the last four years. We visited much of the United States and parts of Canada. Traveling by motorhome has allowed us to immerse ourselves into each area without feeling the time constraints of being on vacation. Between the headaches of air travel, hotels, cruise ships, and now COVID-19, living on the road was what we needed.
Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, California
We stayed at Santee Lakes about a year and a half ago. The sites are huge and it has all the amenities. Our only complaints were regarding the intermittent internet and dirt rather than asphalt pads.
Twice a day, we walked a good portion of the RV park for exercise and fresh air. Unlike many motorhome parks, there were more than enough places to walk.
With each walk there was always something to enjoy. Seems like whenever we didn’t bring a camera, some incredible photos like 3 young hawks on the ground waiting for their parents or newly hatched duck chicks begged to be photographed.
A couple of modes of communication that have almost gone by the wayside.
This kid enjoyed towing his dog around the park.
There were numerous sharp-shinned hawks.
Life in San Diego, CA
Life in San Diego has been our benchmark when comparing other parts of the USA to settle down in again. Without a doubt, we could easily live in almost every state. Each region has so much to offer with unique attractions. We are not fans of California’s politics, high cost of living, taxes, and crowds, but San Diego’s climate and lifestyle are difficult to beat.
We still own a house in San Diego that we’ve used as rental property. Even though we try to get back every year, tenants and normal wear and tear takes its toll. For the last month we have been busy with house repairs. Fortunately, most businesses were open. There are so many consignment and furniture stores to choose from. We visited a number of open home models to see what the current decorating ideas are for the area. Fixing the house wasn’t our only need for repairs. We are still waiting for RV parts at Holland RV. Both of us had routine physician visits. Michael (pictured above), trying to tour model homes after cataract surgery with one eye still dilated.
Unfortunately, the new COVID-19 cases have not been decreasing. Kind of expected given the reopening of businesses and increased activities. Because of our multiple medical procedures, we stayed socially isolated. Frustrating because we really wanted to visit friends who we hadn’t seen in awhile.
Michael’s father, Jim, still lives in Escondido, CA. His assisted living facility is under quarantine because of some recent asymptomatic staff and residents testing COVID-19 positive. We were able to meet him at the door and capture a couple images of him on his 95th birthday.
We finally got a glimpse of the beach at Cardiff by the Sea. So beautiful. We will come back on a weekday when hopefully, it’s not as crowded for a walk.
A strawberry full moon. We decided to spend a few months each year in San Diego, but will continue with this life on the road for a little while longer. There are so many more adventures and places to see in this amazing country. The RV lifestyle for us has been a wonderful means of exploration and travel. Frequently moving to new locations helped to distract from the limitations of such a tiny living space. But, with all the RV repairs, crowded National Parks, run down yet crowded RV parks and lack of internet, we miss the comforts of a house. Hopefully when COVID is behind us, international travel will open up again.
