Orange Beach had the same beautiful fine white quartz sand beaches, that originate from the Appalachian Mountains, that Pensacola Beach had. We were there just at the beginning of spring break, but the crowds of partying college students were significantly diminished because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Orange Beach, Alabama
We stayed at Buena Vista Coastal RV Resort. They had full service and resort amenities, however, their indoor pool and spa were undergoing renovations.
Once again, we saw Osprey daily, frequently with fish and occasionally softshell turtles in the lake.
Lunch at Playa at Sportsman Marina was delicious. Nice views of the marina.
We enjoyed the beach art decorating the restaurant.
Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores Alabama
Following the War of 1812, it was decided to add fortification to Mobile Point. Construction began in 1819 that lasted 15 years. Fort Morgan was built by slaves. Over 30,000,000 bricks were used.
In 1947, the State Department deeded the Fort to the State of Alabama to be used as a historical park.
It was fun to explore all the nooks and crannies. There were an incredible number of arches and beautiful doorways. Best part, it is dog friendly and Jake was welcome in all the buildings on the state park property.
Red or White Wine, Orange Beach Alabama
What a nice find. They had a wonderful wine selection at very good prices. We were just in time to order one of their delicious charcuterie boards with one of our favorites, Rombauer Zinfandel. They were also dog friendly so Jake got to come in a lay beside us.
The local artwork added to the ambience.
Flora-Bama
In 1962 the state of Florida gave Alabama 2 miles of beach front in return for construction of the Perdido bridge. In 1964, the Tampary family decided to build a bar right at the state line. As tourism and traffic increased, so did the beach bar. They have live music throughout the day and night and draw huge crowds, especially during spring break.
There were a number of bars and stages at Flora-Bama. Their “bushwhacker”, a rum based frozen coctail, supposedly had the equivalent alcohol of 3 beers. We had to check it out while enjoying Trevor Finlay’s music.
Thoughout Flora-Bama, there were bras on the ceiling. Donations were being accepted.
Looking a bit long in the tooth, time for a shave and haircut. This was our last stay on the Gulf for awhile, we will miss the stunning white beaches.
