Grassy Key is one of 1,700 islands in the Florida Keys. It’s in the middle keys, just northeast of Marathon. In the past, we stayed at Big Pine Key, which is southwest of Marathon, but at the time we made our reservations, they were still rebuilding the RV park from Hurricane Irma. It was a great location to explore the area, or just relax watching the water conditions change each day.
Grassy Key, Florida
Other than the Grassy Key RV Park and the S.S. Wreck Grill, there wasn’t much to see or do. Marathon is where all the stores, bars, restaurants and activities are located. We spent Christmas on Grassy Key and enjoyed a pot luck dinner. We made a key lime pie for the pot luck, and kept the quiche for breakfast!
Grassy Key RV Park
From Key Largo it was an hour drive south to Grassy Key on the Overseas Highway. Our site had unobstructed water views and was very private. The RV Park had full service and good satellite reception. Unfortunately, their internet was awful.
From our front window we had stunning views and enjoyed watching the tides change and the fishermen fish.
Florida sunsets and sunrises can be vivid. We stayed here for a couple of weeks and never got tired of just taking in the scenery.
There were winter storms across the USA during our stay making for some dramatic skies.
S.S. Wreck, Grassy Key
S.S. Wreck is a favorite local bar and grill. We enjoyed their fish, oysters and burgers.
No Name Key, Florida
No Name is one of the Keys to see Key Deer. The deer are a subspecies of white tail deer and are the smallest in the USA. Adult females only weigh about 50 pounds with an average height at the shoulder of 2 feet.
When in the area, it’s a must to have food and a drink at the No Name Pub. The Kentucky Bourbon burger was delicious. The bartender claims there are over $400,000 in dollar bills stapled to the walls and ceiling. It was quite a sight.
Nearby Blue Hole on Big Pine Key had a couple of resident alligators.
Sombrero Beach, Marathon, Florida
It’s a public beach in Marathon that has beautiful sunset views. It’s also where Loggerhead Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.
Crane Point Museum, Marathon
They are a nature center, historic site and a museum. They were dog friendly so Jake was able to take the 1.5 mile stroll with us.
Franks grill in Marathon had a strip mall restaurant feel, but the food was amazing. There’s nothing like fresh fish and tender steak.
Key West
It was fun exploring Duval Street again. There is something for everyone in Key West including a bar for body painters. If we had been staying in Key West it would have been fun to watch. The restaurants have outdoor seating and live music during the day. It’s definitely a fun vibe.
