Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is in the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan along Lake Superior. The area is known for it’s stunning colorful cliffs, hiking trails, boating and waterfalls.
Munising, Michigan
We stayed at Pictured Rocks RV Park in Christmas, Michigan. It wasn’t a long drive from Houghton. The sites were large with full service and decent internet. We had great satellite reception. There wasn’t much for amenities, but the park was quiet.
Each day we drove by this retired motorhome appreciating the improvements in comfort modern RVs provide.
Across the street was a biker bar that had friendly patrons and served decent food. A Voodoo Ranger IPA in a Pabst glass.
Waterfalls
There are around 17 waterfalls to see in the Pictured Rocks/Munising area.
Munising, Wagner, and Alger Falls.

Even though there are over 100 miles of hiking trails along the the cliffs, and some lead to beaches, the best way to see Pictured Rocks is by boat.
The National Park service had concessionaires that provided boat tours and kayaking along the cliffs.
Conde Nast Traveler said “it’s the most beautiful place in Michigan”.
The high speed catamaran cruise lasted about 2.5 hours and provided a lot of photo opportunities. The cruise travels over 30 miles round trip.
In some areas, the ground water seeped through the rock creating vivid colors.
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a beautiful area with the stunning cliffs and waterfalls. Many of the trails and waterfalls were dog friendly, giving Jake a chance to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors too.
Spray Falls were amazing, cascading 70 feet directly into Lake Superior.
The Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse. It was built in 1868 to guide boats from Lake Superior into the Munising harbor. Unfortunately, it’s light was hard to see, so it was decommissioned in 1908. The lighthouse went into severe disrepair. A Rescue Committee has been gradually restoring it.
