Black Canyon City, Arizona is north of Phoenix. Before heading to the Grand Canyon, we wanted a week of warmer temperatures, be near a Costco to stock up, and order stuff on Amazon.
Black Canyon Ranch RV Park
The RV park is located in Black Canyon City, Arizona. Seems like almost everyone here had an ATV and rode them on the numerous trails. The campground had a lot of pink grapefruit, orange, and tangelo trees. The owners encourage us to pick them since the fruit was becoming too ripe and the trees were blossoming with next years crop. We enjoyed fresh squeezed orange and tangelo juice each day. Sandy enjoyed grapefruit martinis.
They also had a pool and spa that was well maintained and rarely used, so we indulged in a hot soak each day.
Ben Avery Shooting Facility
The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is a public outdoor shooting range in northern Phoenix managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. At 1,650 acres, it’s the largest public operated shooting facility in the USA. They host numerous events. There are 67 ranges including 5 archery ranges, clay target shooting, and a 99 site campground.
Desert Botanical Garden
Located about an hour south of Black Canyon City, Arizona. The Desert Botanical Gardens consist of 140 acres and was founded in 1937. It was very fragrant because there were so many trees blooming. They schedule numerous events, workshops and music in the gardens.
It was late March and the cactus were starting to blossom.
Butterfly Exhibit
Even though its a small exhibit, there were a lot of butterflies and very well done with so many flowering plants.
Plants were flowering throughout the gardens.
Goldfinches, hummingbirds and woodpeckers were prevalent.
We saw numerous ground squirrels and lizards.
We were informed that rattlesnakes were out, since the nights and days were warmer, but we didn’t see any.
Jake got a new toy from Costco.

I recognize the Monarch Butterfly (first one in the row on the left-orange). Monterey Pacific Grove as a Monarch Sanctuary and they show up in October when they have the Butterfly festival. I had to paint a large wooden one for an art event.
Michael says
I have yet to witness them gathering/migrating in large groups. Hopefully one of these years!
